Danish Gambling Authority (DAG) Overview

The Danish Gaming Authority, established in 2000 as part of the Danish Ministry of Taxation, initially oversaw arcade and restaurant machines, along with 7 state-operated land-based casinos under Danske Spil.

The landscape transformed in 2012 with the passage of a new act, ending Denmark’s gambling monopoly. From January 1, 2013, the Danish Gaming Authority (DGA) embarked on its journey as an independent entity, tasked with regulating a well-ordered gambling market for both operators and players.

Ensuring Fair Play

Today, the DGA regulates all gambling forms, including lotteries, poker tournaments, casinos, gaming machines, sports betting, and online casinos. Its commitment to fair and responsible gaming emphasizes player protection and crime prevention.

License Requirements for Operators

Operators need a Danish license if they target the Danish market, indicated by using the Danish language, currency, customer service, specific payment methods like Dankort, or direct marketing to Danish consumers. Available licenses include Online Betting for event outcomes (excluding lotteries) and Online Casino licenses.

Filing Complaints

While the DGA is open to hearing issues with gambling operators, it does not mediate player-operator disputes. Complaints should relate to regulatory breaches or illegal operators. Players should address game-related issues directly with the operator, adhering to complaint filing requirements for consideration.

For broader disputes, the Danish Dispute Resolution Centre or the Consumer Complaints Board are the next steps, following direct operator contact.

Checking an Operator’s License

The DGA requires its logo to be visible on licensed operators’ websites, ensuring they operate under regulatory supervision. A public list of licensed operators is also available, helping players verify legitimacy.

Promoting Responsible Gambling and Self-Exclusion

The DGA takes responsible gambling seriously, mandating visibility of legal gambling age information, player safety tools, and support. Players must set deposit limits before engaging in gambling activities. The ROFUS register allows players to self-exclude from all gambling forms, with options for temporary breaks or permanent exclusion.
